The ATO has seen recent increases in attempted security breaches and compromised Tax File Numbers.
A recent example of this saw a taxpayer's tax return lodged fraudulently, with the perpetrator attempting to obtain a refund of PAYG Instalments amounting to $153,000. The ATO intercepted this before any refund was paid.
What is the ATO doing?
To combat this issue, the ATO have been sending text messages and emails to taxpayers to alert them that their myGov account details have been updated and to contact the ATO if this update was not completed by the taxpayer.
How to protect yourself
These security breaches highlight the need to be vigilant in protecting your personal information. Never send your Tax File Number or Bank account details via email.
If you receive a message concerning changes to your myGov account, please contact the ATO or our office to ensure appropriate action is taken immediately.
