What drew you to compliance and advisory in the first place?

I started my career in regional Victoria, working in tax right after university. I moved to Melbourne, then in 2010 a role at AR&B brought me over to Perth. So what drew me to the role has been more of a natural career progression – but what I love about it now is the challenge, and the ability to help clients think about future goals and put plans in place to achieve them.

What’s one way your skills have helped a client avoid a major issue or unlock a new opportunity? 

It’s all about being aware of your options. Advisory – those regular weekly, monthly, or quarterly discussions – empowers our clients to prepare for the future. With the right plan in place, you can navigate challenges like cashflow budgeting, and be flexible when changes are needed.

What’s something people don’t realise about your role that you wish they knew? 

When you tell people you work in an accounting firm, they assume you’re busy right after the financial year. But with advisory that’s not the case. Yes, the financial year has ended, but our work goes on all year round. And in fact we’re usually waiting for the dust to settle and the analysis to begin – that’s typically at least into the next quarter.

Our clients need advice and support all year round, not just at EOFY.

What’s the most satisfying part of solving your clients’ challenges? 

The best part is when we get to see clients hit their goals, both in their business, and personally. When they see a tangible outcome of all the planning they’ve put, how it’s driven their growth, and they can see how well they’re doing.

How do you see your role evolving in the next few years? 

These days, many areas of accounting are automated. This is great: information is available quickly, even in real time, and clients are now able to look further forwards. This means that as technology continues to improve we can help clients look beyond the current year, and incorporate real, data-driven goals into their planning. This can even include succession planning, timing of sales of property, and retirement too.
